About
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, also known as Hot Lips, are a low maintenance succulent with bold paddle shaped leaves, often bearing red margins.
Light: Direct or bright but indirect
Direct light is best for thyrsiflora, but they will survive in bright but indirect light over the summer months if you make sure to move them to a south facing window over winter. In brighter light the leaf margins will turn red (giving it the name Hot Lips), whilst in indirect light the whole leaf will be powdery blue/green.
Watering: Low
As a desert plant, it is best to allow the soil to fully dry out between waterings. You will notice the leaves start to wrinkle and loose their succulence if in need of a good drink. Too much water or leaving the plant to stand in water will likely cause the roots of this succulent to rot.
Humidity: Low
Kalanchoe prefer warm, dry air so avoid placing in a room with naturally high humidity levels such as a bathroom or small kitchen. Misting the leaves is not recommended.
Note:
In an extremely hot South-facing window or conservatory you may find a few leaves on your Kalanchoe crisping and falling off as it adjusts to its new setting, but don't fret! You should start to to see plenty of new growth once it has settled.
