About
Howea forsteriana, commonly known as the Kentia palm, are popular for their large architectural leaves which are often depicted in tropical prints. They are one of the easiest palms to care for and require minimal attention.
Light: Indirect light
Howea love a spot with bright but indirect light. They can tolerate early morning or late afternoon sunlight on their leaves, but no hot, midday sun.
Watering: Moderate
It's best to allow the top 2 inches of soil to dry during the Spring and Summer months, and in Autumn and Winter at least half the pot of soil should dry out before you water again. Make sure the plant is never sitting in water as this can lead to root rot.
Humidity: Moderate
Being a tropical palm, Howea enjoy high levels of moisture in the air. However, they tend to fare pretty well in average household humidity levels. Misting the leaves is recommended, especially during the cooler months when using known air dryers such as fan heaters and radiators.
Note:
Palms are extremely good at purifying the air, removing household toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide, making them not only an attractive addition but a health conscious one too!
The large leaves on a Howea tend to gather dust. Wipe them down regularly with a damp cloth or use a neem oil and water mix to stave off pests. There is no need to prune but you can remove any old browning or yellowing leaves at the base of the stem using a sharp instrument. No pulling!
