Phalaenopsis Orchids are one of the easier and more popular in the species due to their fairly easy going nature and long lasting display of blooms, which can stick around for a few months at a time.
In the right environment, Phalaenopsis are a relatively low maintenance plant. As natural epiphytes, they prefer a free draining compost with plenty of bark for the roots to cling to. It's best to buy an orchid specific compost to ensure longevity. Keep them in a clear nursery pot, even if moving on from the original pot, as some of the roots are able to photosynthesise and giving them light will keep the plant healthy.
Water weekly during the warmer months and feed with an Orchid fertiliser. Reduce watering to once every few weeks over winter. A spot near a window is best when the light levels are low but be sure to move your Orchid out of direct sunlight when the sun is strongest as the leaves will likely scorch. A humid spot is preferable, but somewhere away from draught and fluctuating temperatures is fine.
Once your Orchid has finished flowering, cut the flower stem down to the second node (joint). A new flowering shoot should form if the Orchid will flower again in this cycle. If the plant is large and healthy but hasn't flowered for a while, move it to a cooler spot, reducing the temperature by about 5°C (8°F) for a month or so. It should then send up a new flower stem.
