Top 10 Houseplants for your bathroom - these plants will thrive

Whether you’re completely renovating your bathroom or simply looking to add a touch of foliage for a subtle update, these houseplants will thrive in your bathroom. The key factor is humidity and these houseplants love moist, humid conditions. So read through the best houseplants for the bathroom and choose your favourite combination to create your own botanical haven in your bathroom.

Easy tip: houseplants with a pointed or tapered tip are ideal plants for the bathroom because they have adapted in their natural habitat to capture and channel moisture droplets from the atmosphere, directing the water across their leaf’s surface and back down to the soil. Below is a collection of houseplants that are ideal for all bathrooms and can tolerate various light conditions.

Epipremnum

Epipremnum, also known as Pothos or Devil’s Ivy, is a fast-growing low maintenance houseplant that loves to live in the bathroom! One of the commonly recognised trailing plants, this popular houseplant is loved by many due to its easy-going nature and beautiful cascading leaves. Epipremnum enjoy well-drained soil – allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root-rot but mist their leaves regularly to keep moisture levels high.

Alocasia

Alocasia is the ultimate tropical botanical houseplant for luscious jungle vibes in the bathroom. Alocasia grows quickly in the summer and enjoys warm, humid conditions with indirect sunlight. In its natural habitat it would be situated in dappled shade so do keep this in mind – a bright bathroom window ledge may be too much for your Alocasia unless the window is frosted. Alocasia leaves are heart-shaped with prominent veins running through their leaves and some variegation. Some variegation might include spots, blotches or irregular organic patterns, making them an intriguing houseplant choice.

Begonia

The stunning Begonia houseplant, prized for their multifarious colours and patterns, makes for an exceptionally good bathroom plant. Enjoying high levels of humidity, they add a touch of colourful tropical to any type of bathroom. They prefer regular hydration but avoid overwatering.

Orchids

Orchids naturally thrive in humid environments making them perfect for bathrooms. Try placing your orchid somewhere in your bathroom where there is bright but indirect light. The high humidity will enable orchids to thrive. Their vibrant and tropical aesthetic adds the perfect pop of colour to bathrooms, complementing plants with greener, leafier foliage. Water your orchid thoroughly until the roots are fully drenched but do make sure to let the water drain fully.

Peace Lilies

Peace lilies with their dark glossy green leaves, love warm climates and high humidity. They are a strong choice for any bathroom! These houseplants not only tolerate high humidity but also help absorb moisture and purify the air.

Calathea

Calathea Lancifolia, Orbifolia, Makoyana or the more common Prayer Plant, are all varieties of Calathea houseplant that love warm, humid climates and can handle medium to low light conditions.

Fittonia

This tropical plant also known as the Nerve Plant is a good addition for any bathroom that has medium light conditions, where the sunlight is not constantly bright throughout the whole day. In their natural environment, Fittonia are most acclimatised to humid conditions with bright but shady spots and would do well in a bathroom that experiences intermittent or indirect sunlight. Fittonia’s watering preferences can be a bit temperamental – don’t water enough and they will continually wilt placing stress on the plant, but overwater and they will stagnate in the moisture, which is not desirable. They can be challenging at times and you want to keep Fittonia gently and continuously hydrated without drenching the soil, so they do not suit erratic watering schedules. For this reason they are more suited to individuals with intermediate-expert houseplant growing skills.

 Philodendrons

A wide variety of Philodendrons, known for their air-purifying qualities, appreciate the high humidity of a bathroom. Philodendron are known to be able to thrive in shady spots and although growth may be slower they will still flourish nonetheless, making them a great choice for humid bathrooms that have low light conditions.

Monstera (Swiss cheese plant)

Similar to philodendrons, the classic favourite, Monstera, especially the Monstera deliciosa (Swiss cheese plant), thrive in moist bathroom environments. A popular houseplant and all round star of the indoor plant movement – watch your Monstera come to life in your bathroom!

Bromeliads

Bromeliads do best in a room with naturally high levels of humidity - the ideal bathroom plant! Place a dish filled with stones and water beneath the plant to increase moisture levels if housed in a room with dry air, or mist regularly. Guzmania are a type of Bromeliad that enjoy bright but indirect light and moderate watering. The 'Francesca' variety that we stock has a beautiful pinky/purple flowering bract adding a stunning pop of tropical colour to any home.
