Bromeliads are easy to care for houseplants that are well suited to indoor life providing a few key requirements are met. Their interesting and detailed foliage is a huge selling point, and their easy going nature makes them perfect for the hustle and bustle of modern living.
Light: Indirect light/light shade
Bromeliads prefer bright but indirect light, but will tolerate a lightly shaded spot too. They will sit happily on an East or North facing window sill but will need to sit further away from a South or West facing window. They can handle brighter light if the humidity levels are high.
Watering: Low
Bromeliads are epiphytic plants (a plant that grows harmlessly on another) so their roots are mainly used to anchor them to the host plant. This doesn't mean they don't need water to the roots, but rather they can tolerate periods of drought when humidity levels are high. Because they don't naturally grow in soil, if the roots sit in water they will most likely rot. Water your Bromeliad into the centre of the cup/middle of the leaves when the soil has fully dried - rain or filtered water is best. Make sure to keep the water fresh by removing any old and stagnant water before refilling the cup.
Humidity: Moderate/High
Bromeliads come from tropical climates and therefore enjoy high levels of humidity. A bathroom or kitchen can be ideal, and natural moisture in the air means you can forgo watering a little longer! Kept in a room without naturally high humidity they will need a regular misting of water from a spray bottle.
Note:
Bromeliads are notoriously slow growing. Keep them for the beautiful foliage, and colourful bracts! Because of their slow growing nature and the fact that their roots are mainly there to anchor the plant, you won’t want to repot them too often. When you do, be sure to only go one pot size up. Extra soil will hold excess moisture which could upset the roots.
Bromeliads in the forest would collect nutrients from a build up of debris such as fallen leaves from the trees above. Make sure to feed them over Spring and Summer, but only using natural fertilisers as this is a plant that's sensitive to chemicals. Rain or filtered water is best, as the chemicals in tap water can damage the plant.
If this sounds like a lot don’t despair. In regards to care, Bromeliads just want it to be kept simple. Given a small amount of attention, they will flourish.
