Opuntia Vulgaris are easily recognisable by their broad, paddle shaped leaves and bulbous fruits, and like most cacti they require very little effort when caring for them at home.
Light: Direct light or indirect light
Naturally found in the deserts of America, Opuntia Vulgaris prefer a bright spot and will happily tolerate hours of direct sunlight. A South or West facing window is ideal, but a spot with bright but indirect light will be fine too.
As with most cacti, you should let the soil dry fully between waterings. Excess water around the roots of your plant may cause root rot, and too much moisture by the main stem will see the plant start to rot too.
Humidity: Dry air
Opuntia Vulgaris are a desert plant so prefer warm, dry air. Keep out of rooms with naturally higher humidity levels (such as a bathroom or kitchen) and avoid misting.
Although pet safe in terms of ingestion, the spines could cause a nasty injury to animals so best to keep out of the way of curious pets.
If you'd like to try propagating your Opuntia, doing so in soil works best. Sever a newly grown segment from the main stem and allow it to callous over for a couple of days before putting the cut end into some cactus soil. Avoid watering until you can feel some resistance from the new roots, and then lightly dampen the top of the compost.
