About

Lepismium cruciforme are a striking yet low maintenance trailing plant that will surely be a great addition to your cactus collection. There are two types of cactus - desert and forest - and this stunning plant is one of the latter. This means that like a desert cactus, very minimal watering is required, but unlike a desert cactus, they don't need direct light to thrive.

Light: Bright but indirect light

As mentioned above, this forest cactus doesn't need direct light to be happy and will in fact crisp if it sees too much sunlight. It will tolerate a couple of hours of direct sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon, but an area with bright but indirect light is best. They can also manage a lightly shaded spot.

Watering: Low

Although it's best not to leave the soil dry for prolonged periods of time, leaving it to just dry out between waterings is preferred. The easiest way to check moisture levels is by sticking your finger into the soil to the required depth, or by checking the soil through the drainage hole at the base of the pot.

Humidity: Moderate

As a forest cactus, Lepismium cruciforme like a fair amount of humidity, although should be fine with the moisture levels in the average homes. You can regularly mist the leaves if you find the tips of the leaves turning brown and crisp.

Note:

Feed your lepismium during Spring and Summer if the plant hasn't been re-potted, preferably using a cactus fertiliser. It shouldn't need re-potting often as they have a fairly shallow root base, but if you find roots emerging from the base of the pot then use a cactus compost or multipurpose mixed with grit for extra drainage.
