Aporocactus mallisonii are often referred to as rat tail cactus, and even if rodents aren't your thing, the easy to care for rat tail cactus could be! This cactus is an epiphytic plant which means it's naturally found growing in the nooks and crevices of a larger plants or on clusters of rocks. Because of this, it won't often need re-potting as it's not used to large amounts of soil around its roots. A great, low maintenance plant to add texture and interest amongst your other plants.
Light: Direct or bright but indirect
The rat tail cactus prefers to be in a bright spot all year round - in a west or south facing window is ideal. If in a spot with less or no direct sunlight, watering should be reduced as the soil will dry out a little slower.
Cacti prefer their soil to fully dry out between waterings. Not allowing the soil to fully dry (particularly in winter), or leaving the plant to stand in water, is a sure way to rot the roots of this plant. In the Spring and Summer you should make sure to give the plant a thorough soaking when you water. This will encourage thick and healthy stems, lots of new growth, and in some cases flowering!
By changing the temperature of the rat tail's environment over the course of the year (warm in Spring and Summer, cool in Autumn and Winter), you will encourage the plant to bloom - and it will be worth it! Make sure to feed over Spring and Summer to replenish lost nutrients.
