About

Zamioculcas zamiifolia, mercifully referred to as the ZZ  plant, are known for their architectural and striking stems and very basic care requirements, both of which have led to their popularity as a houseplant.

Light: Indirect light or shade

ZZ’s are known for their unfussy light requirements. They prefer a spot without direct light, although early morning or late afternoon direct sun should be fine. They can also tolerate a much shadier spot, so will be perfectly happy sat in a hallway with limited natural light.

Watering: Low

Whilst you will get the best growth from your plant if watered regularly, they can tolerate extremely long periods of drought. Through Spring and Summer, to keep the leaves looking full and glossy, you should only allow half the pot of soil dry before watering again. Gradually reduce watering over Autumn so that by Winter you are letting the soil completely dry out. This mimics the rainy and dry seasons of their natural habitat and will keep them at their best. As Zamioculcas generally come in very compact nursery pots it can be difficult to check the soil, but you should be able to check moisture levels through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. If in doubt wait a week or two - no harm should come to the plant from underwatering.

Humidity: Low/Moderate

Average to low levels of humidity are enough to satisfy these plants. Only in an extremely dry environment will humidity raising measures need to be taken.

Note:

As previously mentioned ZZs often arrive tightly packed into a nursery pot. It is not uncommon for the roots to bulge and deform the shape of the pot! This is not something to be alarmed about as ZZs like to have compact roots, so there's no need to repot until the roots are splitting from the nursery pot. However, if you’d rather pot it directly into a decorative pot, make sure there is a drainage hole and that you're only planting into something an inch or so larger in diameter.
